Top 100 Girls' Names 2023

The new top 100 girls' names came out this past Friday. Like every year, I guessed some changes right and found others surprising.

DROPOUTS AND ENTRIES

As with last year, more names left the top 100 than I expected. Here are the eight dropouts:

  • Aubrey-This name dropped from #81 to #101 this year. I knew this Audrey sound-alike was heading out, but I did not expect it to this year; it dropped less than twenty spots last year.
  • Ayla-This potential double-"a" Isla sound-alike fell from #98 to #104 after just one year in the top 100; a fate I, of course, did not expect.
  • Serenity-As I expected, peaceful Serenity fell from #96 to #105 this year after 14 years in the top 100.
  • Bella-I did not expect Bella, often a short form of Isabella, to leave this soon since it only dropped 12 spots in 2022. Yet, it fell from #85 to #106. As Isabella continues to decline, Bella has definitely lost its freshness.
  • Skylar-As with Serenity, I expected this top-100-name of over 10 years to fall from #87 to #107.
  • Raelynn-Like Ayla, Raelynn departed from the top 100 after just one year, falling from #100 to #111. With Kaelyn declining during the 2010s, this country-singer name's sound must not be ideal for our time.
  • Nevaeh-This faddish backward-spelling of Heaven is finally out of the top 100, dropping from #95 to #118.
  • Everleigh-This Everly spelling variant dramatically fell from #99 to #149. Everly itself is already declining, so it must be dating quickly.
Since eight names fell from the top 100 (when I only expect three), eight new ones entered. Here are the newly popular girls' names:
  • Lainey-This nickname shot all the way from #174 to #54, a higher jump than even Gianna's in 2020. Pop culture could have influenced its dramatic rise, and it did; Country singer Lainey Wilson, whom I never even heard of, stars in the popular TV series Yellowstone
  • Maeve-The Celtic name with the attractive "may" and "v" sounds entered the top 100 as I expected, rising from #103 to #73.
  • Eden-This garden name's modern Christian vibe must appeal to parents since it unexpectedly rose from #117 to #77. I expected Eden to reach the top 100 at some point, just not this year.
  • Vivian-After a few years out, this vintage revival returned from #104 to the top 100 at #87.
  • Madeline-I predicted this name's departure for years before it left last year, but it rose from #102 back to #94. Even as Maddie sounds dated, parents could be holding onto Madeline for its kidlit charm.
  • Lyla-I expected Lyla to be in the top 100 at some point because I heard it so much. This year, it finally rose from #105 to #98.
  • Clara-Like Vivian, Clara, having risen from #110 to #99, deserves better than to hover near the edges. As classic Claire is falling, more parents could warm up to Clara's Nutcracker charm.
  • Allison-Like Madeline, this is a name that left last year but unexpectedly returned this year. It rose from #101 to #100, but it also dropped 65 babies last year. Hence, Allison will probably be back for just one extra year.
The only name I expected to enter the top 100 that did not is Juniper, which only rose to #113. However, it could still rise in larger numbers next year.

NOTABLE RISES WITHIN
  • Hazel rose from #27 to #19, making the top 20 for the first time since 1898.
  • Lily jumped from #30 to #20, its highest point since 2013. With Liliana on the rise, parents are definitely holding onto this classic flower name.
  • Lucy rose from #48 to #40, surpassing its 1880 peak for the first time.
  • Sadie rose to #59, its highest point since 2016; it has surely recovered after a dramatic fall that almost sent this vintage name out of the top 100 in 2018.

NOTABLE FALLS WITHIN
  • Ella, a top 20 name just two years ago, has fallen to #32; that could bring down names ending in -ella, especially with Bella leaving the top 100.
  • Aaliyah has fallen to #86, its lowest point since 2007; other double-"a" names like Ava are also falling.
  • Savannah dropped to #92, its lowest point since 1994; its thirty-year reign in the top 100 is almost over.
  • Ariana has fallen from #90 to #97; being already replaced by Eliana and Liliana, Ariana could leave the top 100 next year.

What did you think about the new top 100? Did any changes surprise you?
