Notable Boys' Top 1000 Rises 2023
I have previously discussed notable girls' top 1000 entries and dropouts, as well as movements within. This week, I move on to the boys' names.
There have been fewer significant rises within the boys' top 1000 than for girls, so it has been more difficult to pick out ten examples. Yet, the following five new entries and five movements within are as significant as they can be:
NEW ENTRIES
Boaz
This traditional-sounding Biblical name, which has never even ranked before, entered the top 1000 at #958. With Beau in the top 100 and Bowie not far behind, Boaz came at the right time.
Hollis
This unisex surname-name, though sounding female, skewed masculine in usage a century ago; it ranked within the 300s throughout the 1910s and 1920s. It also came back for boys first, returning at #1000 while it remains unranked for girls.
Massimo
This is the age of Italian boys' names with Luca and Enzo both in the top 100. Massimo, another Italian name, just joined the club at #842.
Rishi
Names from all backgrounds are rising within the top 1000. With Hindi name Rishi entering at #968, the diversity is only growing.
Wren
Wren is still on the rise for girls. Yet, the bird name is becoming increasingly unisex; its entry into the boys' top 1000 at #991 shows.
NOTABLE RISES WITHIN
August
This vintage name, having risen from #109 to #104, is the closest it ever got to returning to the top 100 since it started rising again in the 1990s. August could be the next vintage revival.
Elio
The Disney Pixar movie of the same name has yet to come out, yet anticipation seems enough to make Elio rise from #876 to #646. It could become an even bigger hit once the movie comes out.
Harvey
Vintage Harvey rose from #402 to #327, its highest point since it started rising again. The name can be recovering from the Harvey Weinstein scandal in the late 2010s.
Jonah
For a long time, Jonah has been one of these "sweet spot" names with no signs of getting too popular. Since it rose from #135 to its peak at #124, though, that could change.
Tadeo
While Mateo entered the top 10, Tadeo moved into the top 500 at #473. Parents are clearly using it as an alternative.
What do you think about these rises? Do any surprise you?
