Top 100 Boys' Names 2023

I recently wrote about the new top 100 girls' names; today I will move onto the boys' names.

DROPOUTS AND ENTRIES

While I expected four names to leave the top 100, the number was actually five. Here are this year's top 100 dropouts:

  • Adam fell from #97 to #102 after returning to the top 100 for one year. If it continues declining, this classic name's time is definitely up.
  • Jameson dropped from #85 to #103 after six years in the top 100. It seemed like a perfect honor name for a James, but -son surname names are declining.
  • Xavier, the first dropout I expected, fell from #100 to #105 after over 20 years in the top 100.
  • Nicholas fell from #98 to #109, as I expected. This classic name, a top 100 hit since the 1970s, is clearly tired. Short form "Nick" also sounds dated.
  • Greyson enjoyed seven years in the top 100 before falling from #95 to #117. Surname names ending in -son must really be declining, then.
Two of the names I expected to leave the top 100 ended up staying: Colton (which only fell to #94) and Jeremiah (which actually jumped from #93 to #92). These names must not be quite ready to go yet.

Replacing the five dropouts are five entries. Here they are:
  • Thiago made a huge jump from #107 to #71, as I expected. It has officially joined other Spanish hits Mateo and Santiago.
  • Enzo unexpectedly rose from #121 to #90 this year. It is an Italian name in the key of Luca; its "o" ending is also stylish.
  • Luka, a Luca respelling, joined Americans' current taste for Italian names by rising from #117 to #95.
  • Amir, an Arabic-sounding name, rose from #113 to #99. The top 100 boys' names are catching up to the diversity of the girls' names.
  • Gael, another expected entry, rose from #104 to #100; it mixes Celtic references with Spanish roots.

NOTABLE RISES WITHIN
  • Mateo rose five spots into the top ten, becoming the first Spanish name to reach that high.
  • Ezra rose ten spots from #25 to #15, making the top 20 for the first time. It can eventually replace Noah in the top ten.
  • Miles rose over ten spots to #43, making the top 50 for the first time.
  • Axel rose back to its 2020 peak at #72. Time will tell if this name rises any higher.

NOTABLE FALLS WITHIN
  • Ethan has fallen to the same spot it was in 2000: #25.
  • Aiden has fallen to #40, its lowest point since 2006. Sound-alike Jayden is also falling, marking the end of the sound's era.
  • Lincoln has fallen to #64, its lowest point since 2015. Such presidential surnames might be falling because of their discovered scandals of slavery.
  • Jordan reached #98, its lowest point since first entering the top 100 in 1982. This name could leave next year.

What do you think about the new top 100? Do any changes surprise you?
