By the time I finished compiling this list, I found out "F" is only slightly more common a first initial for boys than it is for girls; it is still much rarer than even "B" or "D." It might be the notion that the initial for a poor letter grade is more suited towards boy stereotypes regarding destructive behavior. However, I'm sure plenty of boys with "F" names have done fine in school and/or become successful in life.

Before the Middle Ages, a young man underwent enslavement for six years. Afterward, he returned to England. He later became a bishop and converted Ireland to Christianity. That man, after whom the major holiday of March is named, is St. Patrick.  St. Patrick is the earliest known bearer of the anglicization of the Latin Patricius, meaning "nobleman." He has seen usage in Britain, where he was especially popular in Scotland, since the twelfth century. Even though Patrick also became a name in Ireland, the Irish considered him too sacred for use. That might also explain why the name emerged several centuries after the saint's time, even in Britain.  Patrick did not become popular in Ireland until the seventeenth century. Plenty of boys' names have stayed popular for centuries. Think John, Charles, Robert, and Henry. These names have always ranked within the top 500. However, as with girls' names, they don't have to always be popular to count as classic. Instead, a timeless classic boys' name must: Have experienced widespread, consistent use and/or roots dating back 500+ years (Alfred and Ira sound too vintage for this list) Translate into multiple languages through variants and/or usage (excluding "timeless" names like Wesley) Be instantly recognizable and, hence, not too obscure (ruling out Barnaby and Enoch) This list is not perfect; you may not agree about all the names below qualifying as classics.
