Chester

When thinking of English cities, you might list London, Birmingham, and Manchester. Just remove the "man" from Manchester, and you officially have a fourth city in mind.

Yes, Chester is a place name, a Roman settlement in Chesire, England. His meaning even suggests a place; the name comes from the Latin castrum, meaning "fort." From the place came the surname in the twelfth century. Many place and surname-names are modern in usage, so it is no surprise Chester does not feel as if he belongs in either category.

Instead, Chester has a long history of use and qualifies as vintage. He entered use as a given name, alongside other surnames, four centuries after his surname adoption. Chester has seen consistent usage in England since then but has never been popular before this century.

In the United States, though, Chester has a different story. In likely honor of former U.S. President Chester A. Arthur, Chester was a top 100 hit from 1880 through 1929 with peak popularity at #53 in 1919. He continued his decline until falling out of the top 1000 in 1996. As of 2024, according to Laura Wattenberg's NameGrapher on Namerology, Chester ranks in the lower half of the #1001-2000 bracket.

After Chester fell in the United States, he rose in England. He entered the English top 100 in 2019 and has ranked there since. With Alfred and Stanley also popular there, it's fair to say England has all the old-fashioned names America has yet to revive.

Chester has the appeal to parents seeking old-fashioned names and also nods to English culture.
