Top 100 Girls' Names 2024
The new name data came out yesterday. Now it's time to for the results, and how my predictions live up to them.
As I predicted, six girls' names left the top 100, half of which I did not expect:
- Cora dropped from #93 to #102. I did not expect her to leave despite her decline in 2023 because she is a vintage revival who has only become popular in 2015. Maybe the "cor" sound is scaring parents away once again (because of "coronavirus").
- Ariana declined from #96 to #103 after over two decades of popularity. She has now been replaced by Eliana and Liliana.
- Natalia declined from #95 to #105. She returned to the top 100 in 2020 after two single-year runs in 2006 and 2010, but that run turned out to be brief as well. There is not much drawing modern parents towards Natalia other than as a Natalie alternative, anyway.
- Gabriella fell from #89 to #106. I also did not expect her to leave this year because she fell less than 10 spots in popularity in 2023. Gabriella spent over 20 years in the top 100 and, like Ariana, has a 2000s/early 2010s vibe.
- Savannah dropped from #92 to #107. She was popular for around 30 years, and sounds slightly tired.
- Brooklyn fell from #84 to #108. Since she dropped less than 10 spots in popularity in 2023, I did not expect her to leave. However, Brooklyn has spent almost 20 years in the top 100 and, hence, feels slightly tired.
- Ayla rose from #105 to #69, returning to the top 100 after a one-year absence. Because of last year's fall, I did not expect Ayla to return this year. Yet, she has the liquid pronounciation many parents are seeking as well as international usage.
- Daisy finally returned to the top 100 for the first time since 1908, rising from #110 all the way to #76. Widespread concern about her maturity has kept many parents from using this name for a while, but being a spunky flower name and a Margaret honor name now win them over.
- Millie rose from #102 to #86. Not only does she serve as an Ellie alternative, but she also can be short for many names, including top ten Amelia. Millie is officially the new Molly.
- Josie rose from #108 to #88. Her vintage vibe, energy, and cute-but-not-cutesy sound seem to draw many parents towards this name. Unlike Millie, though, Josie is tied to one formal name, which might limit her appeal as a standalone.
- Melody jumped from #103 to #91. As with Josie, I cannot think of many reasons for her longstanding appeal other than being fun-to-say and having musical connections. Yet, I also believe she can be the new Melanie.
- Lucia rose from #109 to #98. This root form of Lucy has a similar vibe as the also-rising Maria, as well as the trending "Lu" sound and international usage.

This year, I got only 10 names correct, which is slightly worse than last year. This proves how unpredictable name popularity can be.
What are your thoughts on the new girls' top 100?
