Notable Boys' Top 1000 Falls 2023

I discussed notable rises within the boys' top 1000 a few days ago. Today I move on to notable falls.

As many names rise within the top 1000, there are also a lot of names that fall. Like the notable boys' rises, the notable falls were harder to find for boys than they were for girls. Yet, here are five notable top 1000 dropouts with statements about name trends as well as five notable falls within:

DROPOUTS

Braden

This name, which first entered the charts in 1970, became the first of the Brayden spellings to leave the top 1000. It is a sign that the name is getting dated.

Brennan

This Brendan sound-alike, a top 1000 choice since 1966, fell from #994 to #1021. Brendan and Brandon are also falling; Brennan's sound officially marks the last generation.

Gary

This short name, which has ranked most years since 1880, is officially out, having fallen to #1063 from #956. Having peaked at #9 in 1954, the name is difficult to imagine on a modern boy.

Jaxx

Having dropped from #985 to #1007, this respelling of Jax's decline coincides with the fall of Jaxon. This illustrates the sound's fading freshness.

Larry

This name, rhyming with Gary, has left the top 1000 for the first time by falling from #892 all the way to #1011. Its ending sound really pins this name to the 1940s and 1950s; fellow rhyming-name Terry also dropped off the charts.

NOTABLE FALLS WITHIN

Andy

This classic Andrew nickname dropped to #500, its lowest point ever; it is almost out of the top 100. Plenty of other basic names have fallen this far, which makes sense in our liberal diverse-naming era.

Colin

Neoclassic Colin has fallen from #293 to #334, its lowest point since 1968. It may continue to decline, but Colin barely sounds dated and is unlikely to anytime soon.

Devin

This top 100 pick from the late 1980s to the 2000s has hit its lowest point since 1964, falling from #423 to #460. Alternate spelling Devon and rhyming name Kevin are also falling, making Devin the sound of the last generation.

Declan

This Celtic name briefly entered the top 100 in 2019. Since it has fallen to its lowest point since 2013 (#132), Declan clearly shows no signs of returning.

Tony

This Anthony nickname fell from #698 to #847, its lowest point yet. Its fall is a clear sign of the nickname's datedness.

What do you think about these falls? Did any surprise you?
