Top 100 Girls' Names 2022
This past Friday, the new name data came out. Several names moved in and out of the top 100 this year. Perhaps more names left the girls' top 100 than I predicted.
Here are the six names that dropped out of the top 100:
- Allison-I knew this modern traditional is declining, but I did not expect Allison to leave the top 100 this year. Yet, with fellow neoclassic Samantha leaving last year, Allison has taken its turn. It fell from #82 to #101 to end all "Allie" names (except for Alice) in the top 100.
- Eva-I did not expect this timeless multicultural mini-name to leave, but at least it ranked in the top 100 for the entire 2010s decade.
- Madeline-I have predicted that name would leave the top 100 for years since it hovered in the lower 90s. After guessing it wrong for many years, Madeline finally slipped from #95 to #102.
- Peyton-This unisex surname-name made a bigger fall than I expected, dropping from #99 to #104.
- Piper-After about ten years in the top 100, surname-name Piper fell from #96 to #113. I did not expect Piper to leave this soon, but I am also not surprised since it also fell over 10 spots last year.
- Rylee-This Riley spelling variant hovered around the #100 mark over the last few years. With the decline of Riley, Rylee shows no signs of rising anytime soon. It fell from #97 to #107.
The only predicted top 100 dropout that did not leave is Ariana. This name is no longer fresh and fell from #88 to #90 this year. Ariana will certainly leave later this decade, but its time has not come yet.
While six names fell out of the top 100, six new names entered:
- Ayla-This could be a respelling of Isla or Ava with an "l" instead of a "v." Regardless, this name follows the double-"a" trend of our times, rising from #108 to #98.
- Eloise-Vintage Eloise has replaced Madeline as the kidlit superstar of our times, rising from #109 to #86. It also shortens to current nickname "Ellie."
- Iris-Another vintage name that came back more popular than ever before, Iris rose from #107 to #84. It fits in with Isla and Ivy along with fellow mythological names Luna and Aurora.
- Liliana-I did not expect Liliana to enter since it hovered in the lower 100s over the last few years. However, parents must see this as an update to Lillian in the key of Eliana. Liliana rose from #104 to #97.
- Maria-An evergreen classic like Maria is usually not the type of name modern parents seek, but its multicultural style and West Side Story association might've proved otherwise. Maria rose from #105 to #91.
- Raelynn-A new country singer name in the key of Paisley, Raelynn rose from #103 to #100.
I also expected Maeve to enter the top 100 because of its dramatic rise last year. While it remains in the 100s, Maeve has jumped over 20 spots into the lower 100s. Hence, it will likely enter next year.
