Rising Color Names
In honor of Pride Month, let's talk about color names, as colorful flag represents the LGBTQ+ community.
Colors have inspired names for centuries. There's classic girls' name Rose as well as the more contemporary Sage. Anyway, here are some color names in the top 1000 that are currently rising in use:
Emerald
This green gemstone in the key of classic Emily and Emma first ranked for girls in the 1990s. It re-entered the charts in the late 2010s and has risen since then.
Grey
Most color names are mostly or exclusively used for girls, but masculine Grey is an exception. It sounds slightly old-fashioned, but it only ranked since 2013. Grey has slowly been getting more common over time.
Hazel
Hazel was first popular from the 1880s to the 1930s before falling out of fashion. This brown-green shade has been back in the girls' top 100 since 2015 and is not far from its initial top 20 peak.
Indigo
Indigo is a shade of blue that has the cool "o" ending and shortens to trendy nickname Indie. It first entered the top 1000 for girls in 2021.
Ivory
White Ivory, as in elephant tusks, ranked multiple times for girls before 1940. It re-entered the charts in 2013 and has since risen into the 500s.
Jade
This shade of green has ranked for girls since the 1970s. It was in the top 100 in the early 2000s before leaving. Now that Jade has returned in 2020, it could possibly become a modern classic.
Navy
This shade of dark blue has risen quickly for girls since entering the charts in 2019. It now ranks in the top 500.
Olive
Olive first ranked in the top 100 into the 1910s. This vintage shade of dark green is now coming back, returning to the top 200 in 2020.
Onyx
Like Grey, Onyx is mostly in use for boys. This shade of black entered the boys' top 1000 in 2018 and has since shot into the top 500.
Rose
This classic shade of red and pink fell slightly in 2021 though it was clearly coming back most years before that. Rose last peaked in the girls' top 20 before leaving the top 100 in the 1960s, so it should be popular again before long.
Ruby
Vintage Ruby re-entered the top 100 in 2013 after leaving in the 1940s. It was stuck in the 70s for years before it shot into the early 60s in 2021, getting closer to its initial peak in the 20s.
Sage
Green Sage is rising for both sexes at the moment even though it is more popular for girls. It just entered the girls' top 200.
Violet
The most popular and well-known of purple names, Violet was first common from the 1900s through the 1920s. It has been back in the top 100 since 2012. Ranking in the 30s, Violet is now more common than ever before.
