Names Worn by Little Red Riding Hood

"Little Red Riding Hood" has been around for centuries. The original version was written by Charles Perrault in the late 17th century. The Brothers Grimm version of the tale follows more than a century later. In both versions, Little Red Riding Hood doesn't have a real name. She's just referred to as "Little Red Riding Hood". 

However, the tale has been adapted many times. In some of these adaptations, Little Red Riding Hood has an actual name. 

Betsy 

Gail Carson Levine, the author of Ella Enchanted, wrote a picture book adaptation of the tale. Titled Betsy Red Hoodie, Red Riding Hood is renamed Betsy and portrayed as a shepherd. 

Chacha 

Chacha is a Japanese name that was worn by Little Red Riding Hood in a Japanese anime, Akazukin Chacha. Chacha has two lovers, a wolf and a boy-witch. 

Elisabeth

Trina Schart Hyman's picture book retelling of the tale names the main character Elisabeth. However, Hyman refers to her as "Little Red Riding Hood" after Elisabeth gets her red hood. 

Luna 

Serena Valentino and Foo Swee Chin's version in Nightmares and Fairy Tales depicts Red Riding Hood as a girl named Luna. She lives in a village where everyone hates wolves. Luna even discovers that her grandmother is a wolf herself. 

Olive 

Red Riding Hood is named Olive in the 1960 adaptation on Popeye. In that version, Olive delivers hamburgers to a sick friend. 

Ruby 

Ruby is Red Riding Hood's counterpart in the TV series Once Upon a Time. Claudia Davila also wrote a picture book adaptation entitled Super Red Riding Hood. In the book, Red Riding Hood, who is portrayed as a superhero, is named Ruby. The web series RWBY has also renamed the red-hooded girl Ruby Rose.

Ruthie

Gloria Koster wrote a Jewish picture book adaptation, entitled Little Red Ruthie, in 2017. As the title suggests, the main character is Ruthie. Ruthie strolls through the woods to spend Hanukkah with her grandmother on the other side of the woods. 

Scarlet 

Scarlet, a French farm girl, is Marissa Meyer's re-imagined Red Riding Hood in the Lunar Chronicles book series.
