10 Girls' Names that Defined 2020
Now that 2020 is coming to a close, it's time to look back at 10 names that made headlines this year. Whether they were names of celebrity children or names with values related to this current time, they defined 2020.
Betty (unranked)-Betty had an unexpected major drop this past year. Yet, that could change soon. One of Taylor Swift's many new songs this year is entitled "Betty", after Blake Lively's daughter. Betty peaked in the late 1920s and early 1930s, too. It's due for revival.
Clara (#95)-Names meaning "light" are perfect for this time. During this pandemic, families are searching for the light at the end of the tunnel. One such name that I think would definitely get a boost, though, is Clara. It's been stuck in the same range, but hopefully it continues its revival this decade.
Dove (unranked)-Two celebrity babies made this transparent name more well-known this year. First, actress Teddi Mellencamp named her daughter Dove early this year. At the end of the summer came Katy Perry's daughter Daisy Dove. Dove is certainly one to watch in 2021.
Goldie (unranked)-This vintage nickname-name was selected for Siri and Carson Daly's fourth child, born early this year. Gold is something many families would like during a pandemic, right? Taylor Swift also released a new song called "Gold Rush", giving the name even more potential.
Hope (#230)-The one value all families sought this year is hope. When everything shut down, we hope for our nation to open up again. Hope might as well become a common middle name this name and maybe even rise in popularity as a first name.
Lyra (#672)-The birth of Lyra Antarctica gave this transparent choice more attention. That was just one association, but it's famous because Lyra is famous singer Ed Sheeran's daughter. Lyra is about to catch on in a big way, whether it ends up staying in the top 500 or heading towards the top.
Pepper (unranked)-Pepper is a bold name that, like Dove, connects to at least two celebrity babies from 2020. First, Pepper Lynn was born to Christina and Frankie Ballard. Then came Edith Pepper, the daughter of actress Abby Elliott who was born in October.
Rue (unranked)-Rue Rose was born to Teyana Taylor and Iman Shumpert after this summer. A child born later this year received a differently-spelled name with the same pronunciation. It's Rue that will likely catch on, though, because it's more straightforward.
Vera (#252)-Katie Lowes had a daughter named Vera born this November. Vera also means "faith" in Russian and connects to the Latin word for "true". These are important values to have during a pandemic like this.
Willow (#46)-Along with "Betty" and "Gold Rush", "Willow" is the third Taylor Swift song that's most likely to become a trendsetter. It tops the charts on Spotify at the moment. Expect contemporary nature name Willow to become even more popular this decade.
