10 Boys' Names that Defined 2020
Yesterday I posted about 10 girls' names that defined this decade. Today I focus on the boys' names. As with the girls' names, these names defined this past year in several ways.
Bode (#964)-Jeremy and Audrey Roloff from TV's "Little People, Big World" named their son Bode earlier this year. It is a possible diminutive of Bodhi, a trendy name meaning "enlightenment". What family does not want to be enlightened during a pandemic?
Ever (unranked)-Everly recently caught on dramatically for girls. Next might come Ever, which briefly ranked before 1905. The recent birth of Ever Leo might bring this trend of "ever" names to the boys, though. With Evan declining, Ever sounds like the perfect update.
George (#119)-Though he goes by his middle name, George Paterson VI was born to Amanda Patterson and George Wilson earlier this year. The real reason why this name makes the list, however, is the murder of George Floyd. It sparked discussions about racism in real life and online.
Hendrix (#303)-Jackson first caught on as a surname-y twist on classic John. Hendrix is currently doing the same to classic Henry. Yet, the real reason Hendrix makes this list is because actress Sasha Pieterse named her son Hendrix Wade this past fall.
Ice (unranked)-This year, our busy lives froze like ice. It, thus, makes sense for Ice to become a given name at the moment. A celebrity child born late this year was given the name. Hence, I would not be surprised if this rises in the coming years.
Joseph (#24)-The victory of Joe Biden in the 2020 Presidential Election puts his full name on the list. It means "he will add". Any child will add joy during such a challenging time. That's why classic Joseph defined 2020 in a big way.
Nigel (unranked)-Nigel Brixx was one of the many celebrity children born this year. Another reason why this exotic name makes this list is a pop culture association. Nigel Berbrooke is a character in the recent Netflix series "Bridgerton".
Rhodes (unranked)-American actress Emma Roberts named her son Rhodes this year. Rhodes is currently the youngest celebrity child who was ever born. Rhodes is pronounced the same as "roads". There were also several roads for us to take this year in terms of handling the pandemic.
Wilfred (unranked)-Carrie Symonds and Boris Johnson named their son Wilfred early this year. Will this finally give this vintage name the comeback it deserves? Besides, its meaning of "desired peace" strongly connects to the one thing all families want right now.
Ziggy (unranked)-This fall, singer Ashlee Simpson named her son Ziggy Blu. Ziggy, with its unique mid-"g" sound and nickname combination, feels ready-made for the 2020s. Like Wilfred, it means "peace", a value wanted by all families at the moment.
What boys' names do you think defined 2020?
